Chapter 20

"Captain."

"Liric." Early next morning, she was greeted by the other woman's curt, crisp smile.

The Asura was nowhere to be seen. Liric would operate alone to reduce unwanted attention.

"Heard the Dragon Bash festivities are coming along again, certainly keeping the Lionguard busy?"

The Captain gestured a hand towards the empty cushioned chair of the office. A simple office stationed in a landlocked ship that served as a Lionguard headquarters of sorts, guarded with high rock cliffs and large spreads of jagged underwater coral and ruins in its immediate waters. The office was decorated with brass motifs on plain wooden walls and rusty red paint. One potted flower sat on the desk but aside from that, there was nothing homely about it. "No doubt, those importers bring in all kinds of ragtag misfits with all kinds of strange products. It's tough to keep an eye on them. One mishap and it's an opportunity for illegal smuggling or a racist brawl."

"Heard the Asura are bringing in some kind of fancy magical toys."

"Aye, those holographic projector whatever things. Rumor has it they can spawn an imitation of an Elder Dragon."

"That sounds dangerous."

"Precisely why the Lionguard are so occupied. But let's cut to the chase. A infamous mercenary here, not for chitchat, no? You're here about the Crow's Nest case right?"

Liric grinned at Captain Ellen Kiel's quick instincts and business tone. "Yes." While Kiel and Liric were no friends, the Lionguard Captain could remember the mercenary's assistance in the last Risen assault on Lion's Arch, breaking through Claw Island and pushing towards the city. Ever since, Liric had a habit of garnering Lionguard information from Kiel personally while Kiel hired the warrior's services occasionally. It was hardly friendship but at the least it was a working business relationship.

"No kidding eh? Heard you were there. What do you want to know?"

"Anything your guards got on the charr's trail?"

Kiel picked up a metal teapot and poured steaming coffee into a cup. "Care for some?"

"I'm fine, thanks." Liric leaned back against the chair. Today, she was not wearing her full armor, just plain leather armor with a simplified steel chestplate and a long sword off her belt. Investigation probably required less combat, she had reasoned.

After a sip, Kiel looked up and slid forward a piece of parchment. "This is the report on what they found. Essentially, they found nothing really. Some had seen them leave by the northern gates, while others said they left by a chart boat harbored on the southwest shore beyond the cliffs. Yet another said a flying machine had whisked them away."

Liric scanned through the reports and hung her head. "Strange."

"Yes. Very."

"It sounds like magic is at foot."

"I'd rather not jump to conclusions but I suggest you pay a visit to the fisherman at the southwest end of the city. The only real possible and most efficient escape route would surely be by sea."

"Don't you have patrols on the sea borders?"

"Aye. But there is a change of shifts at around the time they might have disappeared. Though we change the shift times every day, to prevent these situations. If in the case someone had access to this information..."  The Lionguard with her captain's hat set down the cup. "Of course this is simply my own suspicions."

She leaned forward, with the brim of her hat painting a shadow over half of her features. "While you're at it, look into something for me will you?"

The Captain still slid another section of paper towards the mercenary.

Liric gave it a glance and nodded. "Sounds like something you'd have me do."

Ellen Kiel chuckled.

Liric realized she would be postponing her fictional vacation further than she would prefer.

"Captain, if you would, hook me up with a ship to Southsun for vacation in about two weeks time."

Chapter 21

As she felt her life force ebbing away as if it was leaking from her finger tips, as she lay on the ground motionless struggling to breathe and keep her mind clear, as her ears were ringing like sirens, as the heavy claws of the immense creature crept closer in her hazy vision, she saw her father's face again. Like some sort of apparition that drifted in the night, a glowing, blurry figure, details obscured by a ghastly mist. She recalled those plays at the theater that nobles went to, that her father always brought her to. She always begged to go. One classic Krytan tragedy where the prince sees the ghost of his murdered father, asking his son to avenge his death and the betrayals within the palace. She was never scared of ghosts as a child, but she feared betrayal rather. The pretentious overly brilliant smiles plastered on everyone's face and immaculate curtsies, couldn't possibly be real, could they?

This time, it was the image of her own father. In her mind, he did not speak. There was no need to speak. For she realized what he was there to say. Wake up, Reina! You have a life to live! Not only did she have a life to live but she had to find out why her family had been killed. And what she had to do with the Great Collapse. She had to make it to Lion's Arch.

But after a brief moment of pain from the frequencies that had rocketed through her brain, she had collapsed and could struggle no more. The weight of sleep was like a suffocating blanket, choking her lungs, forcing all the air out. Her limbs wouldn't respond, nor did she have the energy to try to lift them - she just wanted to lay there forever.

Despite her lack of will, with all her petrified desperation, she opened her eyes wider, wincing at the close proximity to the dirt and sand pressing against her cheek. They watered but she forced her head up to see the massive lizard spin on its four claws away from her. It was distracted by something else. Nathaniel.

His frail shape was crumpled on the ground but he was still moving at least. He had thrown a rock and was struggling to lift himself on his hammer's shaft. She wanted to shout at him to be careful, to run, to stay alive but nothing came from her parched lips.

Could he fight this creature?

With what seemed like all his might, he launched himself to the side, just as the monster's tail swept towards him. The sound of the tail whistled through the air before crashing into the cave walls, sending a shower of rocks and debris through the room. The dodge wore on him however, he was back on his knees, panting. But she could tell he was still recovering from the initial surprise. If she could get up, she could assist him, maybe they would have a fighting chance. She could feel her eyesight becoming clearer.

"Reina!"

She wanted to reply but still couldn't. She had nothing to rid her of this deathly condition. Maybe she had to wait it off. But how long would it take?

"I'm going to get you up, but as soon as you can, keep its attention on you, while I cure the rest of our ailments."

He could do that? Why was she so incapable?

Unmistakably, she felt her body feeling lighter, borne by an uncanny cushion of air, feeding warmth and life through her, spreading to her fingertips, for there was a flash of fire, erupting from the guardian halfway across the room. Strangely, the ring of fire that rushed through her body and along the ground was no ordinary flame. It didn't hurt or singe nor feel warm at all, but a bright blue light that felt like a refreshing breath of air. As soon as it appeared, it dissipated into the greenish darkness of the chamber.

But she found she could stand. Albeit on unsteady feet, she was still... alive.

In her vision that was finally clearing up, the guardian was on one knee, breathing heavily, while muttering incantations under his breath. He had suffered the same, if not a worse degree of internal injuries and afflictions since he had been the first one to force open the door.

He must be preparing a second spell. At the same time, the gigantic reptile was nearly upon him.

Her blade cleared its holster on her back, and swept into a fantastic array of purple glow. She ignored the pain in her arm and wrists from the numbness earlier, and pointed her sword at the creature. There was the familiar tingle of energy arcing into her finger tips and into the weapon. For a spellcaster, the metaphysical thoughts and desires channeled through physical objects, taking form and warping into reality. No doubt, a greatsword was one of the most concentrated catalysts a mesmer could use.

A moment later, the energy had converged into a purple beam of light that spiralled around the blade, discharged and raced towards the black glistening scales of lizard. The surge of energy was a more potent full scale version of her spell that had broken the lock. Suffice to say, it achieved its goal -- getting the full attention of the beast.

Unfortunately, it failed to scorch or damage the lizards skin at all. The invisible metaphysical force of the mesmer's concentrated mental energy however, penetrated its miniature brain and forced it to howl again. This time, she noticed its animated swelling of its throat and the lift of its snout - and she leapt behind a pillar, clamping her palms around her ears.

Despite her preparation, the shockwave of noise filled the air and shook both the chamber and her both to the core and sent her shaking knees to the floor. The Seraph on the other hand, had just finished his spell and stood with his weapon ready, feet apart, and some sort of blue aura that mitigated the effects of the howl. They were beginning to find their stance against their enemy. Surely, they could put up a fight now.

Just then, there was the crumbling of rock above their heads. Like a rainstorm, pebbles and dirt pelted down from above. But from what seemed like a collapsing ceiling, became a tiny hole and the falling form of a small figure.

Oooh, awesome.
I didn't even know people really wrote Fanfiction on GW2 ^_^
This gave me something to read after class in the time gap before work rather than the excessive amount of HP and anime based fanfiction I already muddle through.
I'm rather obsessive at times... Anyyyywho, could I get in on this?

I see you around in game all the time, though if you've somehow missed me or I've always walked past you when you were afk I shall stalk you on The Ledge!

*pick me =D*
