I think I'm missing what makes #14 wintersday themed(besides the candy cane arrows)...if someone could enlighten me, that'd be great.

Well I had this discussion with Thuley, but what makes anything wintersday themed? A costume? A tonic? Snow? That screenshot happened during wintersday.. don't punish us hardworking folks who spend our days in wvw instead of rp'ing on a ledge

Wintersday theme would be just that, anything that's specific to the Wintersday event. Seeing as wvw had candy siege that makes it fit the theme that's all. I don't see how anyone is being punished

EDIT: I didn't realize #14 was winning.

I hate to be the one to say this although I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking it.... Have these contests become more of a popularity contest rather than people actually voting on whose they like the most? Not saying anything against the person who took that screenie... I just feel like there are better contenders I guess.... idk...

LOL. That's kind of missing the point of the competition, though. Finding out what makes it fit the theme, and showcasing that, is part of it. What makes it Wintersday themed? All of the other pictures seem to capture it somehow, they found a common theme. I don't think it's supposed to just look like a random screenshot you happened to take one day during the limits of the competition, regardless of PvE or PvP.

If I can draw a parallel, what it seems like you're saying is that you've put a red square into a pile of blue squares and you're calling color a subjective idea.

It's not about punishing people. I'm just saying that I don't think random screenshots fit what the competition is supposed to be. Otherwise there wouldn't be a theme at all. If it had been a more calculated attempt within the realm of WvW, I think it would be a fantastic contender. But then again, I'm not running this competition.

It was a valid question, considering you have to look hard to see that there's anything wintersday themed.  It's not a punishment, and not a good reason to insult such a large contingency of this game.

Hey i wasn't insulting anyone, it was the other way around.. seems people were angry that something was getting votes that they didnt "approve" of.. how does that make any sense? Either people think it fits, or they dont, and they vote accordingly.  

My point was that it was during wintersday.. and there's a "large contingency" of people who worked their asses off in WvW during this time,  helping their server instead of running around lions arch tickling each other.. but to each their own Before you get all upset, there's almost no chance of that screenshot winning since the majority of people who would like it don't even know the fan art section of the forum exists

I must have missed the tickling. For the best though, since I have the worst knee jerk reaction. I literally knee the tickler in the face.
I almost took my screenshot in WvW. Some places in there were decorated really nicely and the dolyaks were ADORABLE.

You worked your asses off fighting in WvW. We worked our asses off to take good screenshots for the competition.

You deserve accolades for winning, no doubt or argument here. Someone with the best screenshot deserves to win this.

I'm not asking for badges of honor for sitting on my ledge, you shouldn't expect to be included just because this competition doesn't cater to you.

Stared at #11 for a few minutes trying to figure out what I like about it...  it's just a good balance of color. Can't help but wonder how much consideration was put into the picture before you took it.

The announced theme was Wintersday, no further specifications were given.  Still, the from my perspective implied requirement was that the screenshot would show something that was part of the Wintersday content Anet put into the game for this limited time period.

I did reject a screenshot Drake sent in because even though it was Winter themed it didn't show any Wintersday content.  I do think Drake's screenshot was great, but for a different competition down the road at some point.  Whiskey May also suffered the same fate by sending in a great screenshot which too lacked any Wintersday markings.

Now #14 at first glance doesn't look like a Wintersday screenshot, especially when compared to the rest of the lineup.  Still, it does meet the requirement by showing the Wintersday AoE candy canes and was as such accepted into the competition.

#14 is currently in the lead, but there are some 60 hours of voting to go and the current rankings are likely far from final.

Please do remember that while you should not discuss who took which screenshot on the forum, you can encourage your guild mates and friends to stop by and cast their vote (though new users to the forum are not eligible to vote).

As a side note, this isn't the first time that it was pointed out that the screenshot competitions are mainly PvE centric.  That's a point well taken and will be addressed by having a future competition be WvW themed.

As far as whether winners are picked by popularity or merit....
We all apply different standards when it comes to creativity, framing, intent, and so on, thus the voting is a purely subjective "I like this one the most" regardless of a specific (or common) set of standards that can be applied.

Please do remember that ultimately this competition, and any others on here, are supposed to be in good fun.  Let's not worry about the small stuff, and it's all small stuff.

Why argue with words when you can just make a better impact voting for the screenshot you like? Being able to see the results after voting is kinda lame since there's no surprise winner.

I just wish #3 and #14 didn't have the HUD because that's the most distracting thing. Does it also get rid of the pop up numbers too?
