I've gotten pretty good at short-term flipping (~50% RoI) via looking at:
  • number of buy orders
  • number of sell orders
  • difference between lowest sell order and highest buy order

I'm curious, however, to what other strategies people have been employing on the trading post in order to make money.

A richer Ehmry Bay is a more powerful Ehmry Bay.

Looking at the TP I found that this is a ripe time for farming. Prices are higher due to bot bans and gold panic.

No doubt I'm noticing random items with price spikes and official forums doing more crying about the economy.

Demand is noticeably higher than it was past levels because items people put off buying later are now more expensive and people are stockpiling for speculation or some elaborate risky gold making strategy.

Plus its more enjoyable farming with TP on the side, I try not to spend too much time on a trading post screen since it wears me out and puts me in a down mood.

And when I mean farming I mean throughout the world not just Orr. Orr is a good farm but when it gets crowded there are better places with higher return on time.  Farmers don't plant strawberries year round, they plant by season. We gotta be adaptable to profit this economy

Yeah I usually do something similar. I see what teir 6 mat's price has went way up and farm that. Recently it seems to be totems and powerful blood. Powerful blood you can farm the young karka in Southsun Cove for. (Which if you've got a mesmer is really fast with reflects, they basically kill themselves when I use feedback on them)

I was talking less "what to farm" and more "what/how to invest".

I have no problems making money farming. I want to supplement it even more with the trading post.

In terms of investments try to look at crafted items.  Raw material prices will dictate costs of the crafted item. There will be a lag in the crafted item to adjust to raw material cost.

Sometimes you can find gaps in prices and flip them since that price hasn't caught up to the "market price" of that crafted item.

Again a strategy where you can try affecting prices by inserting a stock pile of raw materials in the supply chain to minorly affect down the line.

I tried this with my mesmer last night and it was FANTASTIC!   they took about 90% of there hp off with that first volley.  Since I am spec'd for reflection i rotated feedback, ethereal curtain and the warden for non stop refection.

Trading tips about the TP and what to buy/sell/invest in isn't usually something people are going to do easily - and with good reason. The TP covers every server.  We are literally all competition to each other.

You'll get vague or general replies at best.  Otherwise the advice will stop being viable when everyone starts using it.
