As a player you have a lot of options when it comes to guilds. Generally speaking it's a "players market" where you can freely choose which guild you want to join because almost all of them want you.
Make sure that you do a little research before you join a guild. In an online game you basically have nothing but your reputation. If you intend to play this game for a long time then you do not want to become known as a guild hopper.
Figure out the culture of a guild by joining them on their voice comms before joining the guild for real if they allow you to do so. Running quests/pvp and listening in on voice comms gives you a really good idea what the culture is like.
Ask what is expected of you as player. Ask what time zone the guild runs most of their activities. Avoid guilds that say "we have someone in every time zone" when they only have 10 players total. It's a totally different story when they actually have 200 people.
In general you want to find people who are as active (whether that's 10 minutes a week or 6 hours per day) as you are and whom you can get along with without to pull your hair out in frustration.
Above all: Be honest about your activity. If you only play once a week that is fine as long as the recruiters know about it. Don't say that you are on every day when that is not the case.
