Grenades have been fixed.

I've never been a fan of kit swapping all the time for this class. I really miss playing my turrets, which are now absolutely useless. Hoping the elite specialization fixes that.

For runes and such I've read a lot of engineers running celestial, which is what I'm changing my stuff over to. Easier to adapt they said and everything gets a benefit.

I wouldn't run celestial. Find a fighting style thats suitable for you and build around it. Celestial is wishy washy. If you dont choose a specialization you'll end up doing no dmg and not be able to take a hit, at least in my experience. Turrets are bad for WvW anyways because all an enemy has to do is run away from them and you have lost the effectiveness of them. Multi kit gives you much better versatility in any situation (PvE, sPvP and WvW) because you can contend both close (tool kit, Bombs) or Far away (Elixer gun, grenades). The only thing I have ever seen turrets effective for is in sPvP when defending an objective.

Just my 2 cents. Build however you like. But be aware you could end up with no dmg, defense or sustain. :(

Kits are kinda the engineer's bread and butter, IMO—they're what gives it a lot of its versatility. As far as stats go, I'm inclined to agree with Fraani about celestial, but that being said, I'm pretty sure cele engie is a thing these days (or at least was?). I assume it gives a mix of straight power, condi, crits, and armor/vit/healing for sustain, not unlike those pestilential cele dagger eles.

We--collectively--are still trying to figure out where Engineers fit in post-23 June, and I'm still not sure the best way to build them.  But historically, this statement is just wildly inaccurate.  Pre-patch, Celestial Engineer did pretty much equivalent overall damage to Berserker or Rabid builds--less burst, but better pressure and better cleave--whilst having superior defensive abilities; indeed Celestial Engineer was one of the most sustainable builds around.  Some builds just can't help but to have hybrid damage, and Celestial does ~60% of the Power damage of Berserker, and about ~65% of the Condition damage of Rabid, so when your build has ample quantities of both, Celestial is practically the most damaging stat combo, and although it's not the most tanky option, it provides pretty good survivability, especially for classes that can make ample use of the Healing Power.  Ele, Engi, and Warrior all have very hybridised damage and good Healing Power coefficients, hence those are the professions that have traditionally made the most use of Celestial.  The downside to Celestial is, as I mentioned above, that that sort of hybridised damage doesn't tend to give you a whole lot of burst potential, but given everything else that you do get, it can easily be the strongest stat combination.

AI builds are garbage, and they should be garbage.  Turret Engi was not garbage for a while, which was a mistake, and ANet corrected it.  They serves as really easy crutches for newbs, and that's about it.
