In my quest for a Bifrost, I find myself a few hundred gold short of funds if I want to buy The Legend precursor.  I'm looking to convert some of my various other currencies to gold as effectively as possible.

Things I have plenty of atm:
  • 2.3 million karma
  • ~500 laurels
  • ~900 spirit shards
  • a few hundred or so hero points across my 8 characters
I've seen/read other guides in the past but I wonder if anything has changed for karma and laurels?  For example I notice that the heavy crafting bags from the laurel merchants are now account bound on acquire?  And obviously spirit shards and hero points are completely new so no real idea with those at all?

1 laurel is equal to 1 gold which it depends on your luck (crystalline dust gives the lowest amount of silvers). The karma conversion to gold remains the same. 1m karma = 100g. The only thing that has changed was the price of these materials.

Thats a lot of laurels. if you find yourself short of t6 materials the laurel vendors outside of wvw sell heavy crafting bags for 1 laurel each. they contain 3 random t6 materials each bag.

all up you need about 1m karma for the obsidian shards (500) and ild suggest, if short on a little gold, to convert the rest using commander rings from bought for karma from the heart closest to coil waypoint in timberline falls. 3 of them in the mystic forge along with the cheapest lv 68-80 rare you can buy off the trading post. the way you make money off of it is by getting an exotic thats either worth something, or has a rune/sigil in it thats worth something. roughly 1m karma makes around 100g doing this, the only downside is you want to have a black lion salvage kit.

also if buying rares for the commander rings, stay away from buying rare rings/trinkets

I don't claim to be a gold-making expert, but personally, I would opt for using laurels to buy T6 mats. If you have that many laurels, you can get a crapton of mats with minimal effort, and either use/keep them or sell them for a decent profit. Plus there's always Silverwastes farming.

OK so laurels are still as they were pretty much, the unopened bags can't be sold but the mats inside obviously still can.  The karma conversion with those commander rings was a bit hit and miss, as you might expect when dealing with the MF, but it still helped.  I wonder if forging for linen might work out better for pure karma to gold, although that's very time-consuming so opportunity cost becomes a factor there.

In any case, between the above, plus an inventory clean out, plus some unexpected last minute donations (manbabies may or may not have consequently been discussed), I finally got over the line with my Bifrost.  Thanks for the tips guys; being so poor has never felt so good. ^_^

Meanwhile, anyone figured out anything useful to do with spare hero points and /or spirit shards?

Forging Linen or Wool with karma returns around 12 silver per 1000 karma depending on the market on the day.  It's the most profitable thing to do with your karma, but honestly you can probably make money about as quickly by opening Silverwastes chests as you can by clicking shit at the Mystic Forge.

Hero Points are not a currency.  They're a finite resource for unlocking abilities; whatever surplus hero points you have should be saved for Elite Specialisations.  Spirit Shards work exactly the same as old skill points did--use them for mystic forge promotion recipes to make profit.

I'm not planning on getting the expansion though. :)   But yeah, the official forums confirms there's nothing that can be done with them right now until HoT.  Oh well.

I just went through this saga with my second legendary, although i was lucky enough to get my pre from a random drop in wvw. Basically i milked everything in my inventory as much as possible. one thing that helped was mystic forging crab grabbing gloves and salvaging then selling the result. Basic salvage kit seemed to give me the best return. SW folks your bags with lots of loot too.

Might be a no brainer to some but Halloween skins are coming back. That GS fetches some coin.
