Hey guys! Just got back in from a run and was wondering if anybody on the server is a recreational runner or otherwise? I ran competitively in the sprints in college but now I just run(jog) very slowly to get rid of some pent up energy and stay healthy. I was thinking of doing some races too and thought it would be crazy if I ran into a few runners from Ehmry and never new it.

I know a few of the old oG gang ran. Anybody else?

Or you can post about your distaste for running here. That's ok too.

I run every other morning at 7AM sharp. I've done Tough Mudder, Color Run, Charity Runs....What kind of races you talking about, marathons?

Why, only this morning we were boring people in game with fitness talk.

I stopped running a couple of months ago. Wasn't doing anything too serious; I had started a couple years ago and got up to 4-8 miles a week (2-4 runs a week, depending on how I felt). It's great exercise and I was amazed at the differences it could make in performing day-to-day activities (I have an active job and some fairly active hobbies I thought were keeping me in decent shape; running made all these things easier). However, I was finding it tough to keep my weight up, so I've put running aside for the time being and have been putting more focus into strength training.

I run 5 km thrice a week. I occasionally join running events, usually 10 km or 5 km, but the longest I've done were a couple of half-marathons. I've never joined a full 42 km marathon yet. I'd like to do triathlons in the future, but I'm not confident in my swimming and biking abilities yet.

I do mostly 5ks at this point. I used to do triathlons when I was younger (high school) but I've outgrown my bike and I've never been a really good swimmer so that is on the back burner for now. Furthest race I've done was only a 10k as I grew up running the 400 meter dash in college track and played football (I enjoy distance running but am much faster over short distances than I am over long ones and I am never competitive). My goal is to do an Ironman 70.3 next year after I spend the winter learning to swim more efficiently.

I hear you Blackthorn you won't keep your weight if you start running and don't increase your calories. Lucky for me I put on 30 pounds through graduate school, which I never put on in undergrad because of sports, so I need to cut weight.

Triathlons are awesome and it's a great community. If you look hard enough you can find some short easy ones that are great for crappy swimmers like me. I did one in high school that was 400 meters on the swim, 16 miles biking, and 4 miles running.

Hehe, biking's the hard part for me (only learned how to bike in high school). I feel like I'll be ready to do my first one before the year ends; I just need to get better at biking :)

I sometimes bike . . . to the Starbucks . . .
I do a lot of P.E. stuff with the kids at school, so unless it is summer break I walk 10,000 steps or more by 3pm every day.

I used to do more hiking, biking, climbing, swimming, etc . . . but it is . . . 100F (about 37 C) With 99.99% humidity.

I don't run much but I love weight training. I'm really small for my age/height so I need to take on more calories than I burn during any cardio. I'm trying to stack on some weight that's mostly muscle before doing any extreme cardio. My routine almost every day, wake up, drink protein, wreck noobs in gw2,lift, drink protein, sleep. The life

As much as protein shakes cost and arm and a leg they really do make a dramatic difference.  I just can't eat meat like a norn, so I'm dependant on them but trying for gains without is an ordeal either way.

Really? How much protein in each of your shakes dv % wise, and what kind do you use? I've read too much protein can be as bad as not enough.

My running (or walking in a quick manner, cuz bewbs) is used with an app on my phone called Zombie run. Kinda a fun way to exercise. You listen to a short audio, as if someone is talking to you on a hand radio, its purpose is to guide you through a nifty story. Then it will let you listen to music, and the guy on the hand radio will chime in everyone in a while. And as you run you are 'picking up supplies' for your base. If you have 'chases' turned on. The guy on the radio will tell you you have a horde of zombies chasing you, so your ass better pick up the pace. Its a really nifty motivator, and I hate zombie, and its still fun. At the end, when you stop it will show you a map of where you ran (like most of the run tracker apps), apx how far and apx how many calories you burned along with your pace and that kind of thing.

But I'm not a runner. I unfortunately relegate myself to low impact fitness. But if I pack myself, You'd better believe I'll play DDR for hours on end. And thats as good as, if not better than, as a run any day.

Well, when you put it that way ... maybe I'll just stick to my single post workout whey drink. :o

That sounds like a lot of fun! Gonna have to try it out.

ooh I used to do a bit of weight lifting.  It is the best for getting a really good figure.

Didn't think this warranted its own topic since Cassy mentioned hiking:

Anyone else like to hike? I went for my first real hike this past week, not counting < 3 mile strolls through nature preserves. I bit off more than I could chew and it was brutal. Hiked this trail, which is about 9.6 miles and has a 1,900' elevation change. Could barely walk the day after. I was hoping to take a lot of video, but after climbing the first pass I became much more concerned with just making it the rest of the way. Luckily I went well-prepared. Didn't see much in the way of wildlife, which may have been a good thing. Signs at the trail head mentioned rattlesnakes, scorpions, tarantulas, mountain lions, and coyotes. I saw only saw a few birds, antelope squirrels, small lizards, and many hopping insects. Overall, cool experience, but next time I'll dial it back some so I can enjoy it a bit more.

Here's a few minutes of video if anyone would like to see:

I love backpacking. Trying to start a tradition of spending >5 days in the boundary waters canoeing, portaging, and hiking. It's tough to find places in the Midwest that allow overnight camping though in a more rugged setting.
