If the rangers I've seen in WvW are any indication, all you really need is a zerk longbow and functioning 1 and 2 keys on your keyboard.

Edit:
To stay semi-on-topic: my ranger is currently running a bleed-heavy condi build. Mostly rabid gear atm, though I'd like to experiment with more sinister pieces to see if they boost the damage output. I'm sure it's a million miles away from anything considered meta, but I find it fun and pretty effective (and I'll give a nod to Fayt for pointing me towards the useful regen/swiftness on shout set-up). I'm not super experienced with ranger, though, so take that with the proverbial grain of salt.

YAP. I soloed a camp in greens without very little thought on my build. It made me super sad.

Those are my favorite kinds of rangers. Making them eat their own Rapid Fire with OH sword makes me feel like a Jedi.

There are a bunch of builds out there for ranger, there are the Meta builds and then those I like to call personal preference.
I've been experimenting with a condi build that uses shortbow and axe / dagger. My armor is Dire with Krait runes, and for sigils I'm using geo / Leech on sb and Geo on axe/ Leech on dagger.

I've mained ranger since beta , favorite WvW roaming build is...
Weapons: Shortbow / Sword/Dagger
Main Stats: Rabid (Precision Toughness Condition) and a mix of Dire/Carrion
Runes: Traveler
Sigils:
Earth and Geomancy on Shortbow
Fire and Energy on S/D
Traits:
Wilderness Survival- Expertise Training, Refined Toxins, Wilderness Knowledge
Marksmanship- Sharpened Edges, Hidden Barbs, Light on your feet
Nature Magic- Instinctive Reaction, Evasive Purity, Protective Ward
Skills:
Troll Unguent
Sharpening Stone
Lightning Reflexes
Quickening Zephyr
Entangle for shit ton of condi dmg OR Strength of the pack for Stability/fury/swiftness
Pets: Lynx and Wolf
Nourishment: Koi Cake or Sweet Bean Bun, Toxic Crystal
Summary: This build is more focused on focusing down a single target with bleeds and poison. If you are every locked down you have many stun breaks and evades to escape as well as gap closers and boons to aid. This build is not meant to burst but to do damage over time to single or multiple targets while offering an excellent amount of survivability.
Advantages:
- High Condi Dmg output
- Very Evasive
- High Survivability
- Very flexible build
- Excellent against melee based enemies
- If chained correctly, you can stack over 30 stacks of bleed and 15 stacks of poison
Disadvantages:
- Reliant on landing weapon skills
- Low Vitality
- Vulnerable to heavy CC
- Relatively low burst compared to other ranger builds

I've logged over 3k hours on my ranger, and this build has been working out the best.
I also HIGHLY discourage using a zerker longbow build if you don't like being called a skilless piece of shit.

I've been using the Tomes of Knowledge leveling build :P

And I think I might go with a condi build using shortbow just cause none of my characters run condi and I think I should mix it up a bit.

I personally quite like shortbow. It seems to get a lot of hate from a lot of rangers, and to some extent, I can see why—e.g., the bleed on the auto only works from the back/sides, but most of the stuff you're fighting will be charging at you head-on—but even so, I feel like it brings some good stuff to a fight. The auto is pretty fast, and with Sharpened Edges and an earth sigil, it stacks bleeds very well; if you pop Quickening Zephyr first, you basically get your own Rapidfire with even more bleeding. 2 does AOE poison, which is always good to have on hand. The jump-back on 3 isn't huge, but it's enough to open some distance and avoid stuff. The cripple/bleed on 4 buys you some time and applies more condi pressure. The interrupt on 5 is, well, an interrupt; those are always great.

I've been using a carrion survival build lately, pretty good for 1v1s / general roaming - lots of bleeding, but a fair amount of power too.  Let me know if you want details,  I'm planning on going back and reevaluating the effectiveness of my old apothecary build to see if it still works, I'll update that thread once I do.
