My son recommended this game and the mod for me while I was in GW2 zombie mode. The LW mod changes the outlook of a boring game to a very interesting level, both strategic & tactical of this turn base game. This mod changes everything in the game to a different outlook, much harder & better in an interesting way. Even the game developer has said that relative to the mod, the whole XCOM games are just like a tutorial children play in any level.
I'm currently playing LW at Sept, the 1st year of the alien's invasion, 6 mos after the start, classic mode just one level higher than the normal mode. That's pretty good for a LW newbie and it took 1.5 month in real time play, couple hours a day, couple restarts of the game because screws-ups and I'm still not so sure if I will reach the end game. And to put in a better perspective, normal mode of LW is about as brutal as impossible in XCOM vanilla games.
The mod is free, the game is not. As mentioned above, the vanilla is as boring as TW:Attila. If you want to give it a try, make sure to buy XCOM Enemy Within (and any DLC as bonus sales) then do a quick run on the vanilla to see how it works. Holler here and I help you to start the war properly in LW.
PS: I got my money back many times w/ GW2 WvW mode, same w/ XCOM w/ Long War mod and completely wasted my money on TW: Attila. Hope CU won't screw me up and I know yeah, hope is for Sunday.

Would have my entire squad wiped out in a single turn domino effect again. I need to try LW again before 2. Just tossing in that I recommend it too if any xcom players are looking for a new challenge.

The ground game is at least manageable as long as you play conservatively and know your soldiers's build, hence play it according to your style. Battle scanner and mobile radar are very helpful in this respect. The air game is the one that kills a lot of gamers in LW. You won't know it until you back yourself against the wall and there goes your whole game. Every times I have only 3 interceptors left to cover the continent, (the other 3 are in repair), it's a scary moment.

Yeah. It was weird getting used to that after only needing one or two interceptors per base in the main game.

I found this tactic is very effective against overwhelmed bad-ass enemies. I have a scout w/ concealment ability (TGST rank) to run ahead w/ battle scanner ability (give u 3 uses) and mobile radar. Let him/her run ahead into full cover and throw battle scanner ahead while lining up your snipers (1 is normal, 2 is better, gauss long rifle is my choice) to shoot from afar. I prioritize to kill sectoid commander above anything else in my current game. If enemies moving toward my squad, retreat, overwatched, rinse & repeat. Obviously, you will need at least 4 scouts at that rank for many missions in a month.
