#2 Ehmry Community Standards

Posted Thuley on 25 August 2012 - 02:24 AM

I am not a fan of imposing a long list of complicated rules because no one reads them and fewer folks follow them.  However, every time there is a large number of people in one place some general rules have to be set to ensure that everyone is on the same page in terms of what is acceptable behavior and what is not desirable.
  • Ehmry members are required to carry on civilized conversations and show mutual respect.  Flaming, name calling, racial slurs, and personal attacks are unacceptable.
  • Do not post personally identifiable information about another member.  You are likewise encouraged to not post such information about yourself.
  • No spamming.  No referral/affiliate/commission posts and/or links are allowed.
  • Adhere to relevant intellectual property laws, TOS's and NDA's.
  • Do not discuss, suggest, engage, or encourage any illegal activities.
  • Do not post or link to pornographic material.  NSFW posts are not allowed.  Violating this rule is a bannable offense without warning.
  • Each Ehmry member is limited to one account/alias on these forums.
  • Fundraising is not allowed.  While there are a great many causes worthy to either give or encourage others to give money to such solicitations are not allowed on this forum.
  • Please review the avatar & signature guidelines prior to creating/uploading your avatar/signature.
  • Please review the teamspeak 101: teamspeak etiquette
  • Members who have either identified themselves as in-game hackers, or whom the community has identified as using in-game hacks beyond reasonable doubt, will be permanently banned from the forum.
Thanks for reading through these rules.

The rules may be amended at times as needed.

These rules were amended with rule #11 on February 2, 2015.

#62980 "Stupid Jumping Puzzles"

Posted Rill Soji on 19 December 2013 - 10:41 PM

Some background first! My husband hates puzzles. I love them. So whenever we're out questing around together in GW2 and there's any amount of jumping involved, he always mutters under his breath "stupid jumping puzzle" while I roll my eyes at him. (I usually end up going over to his computer to do the jumps for him.)

So fast forward to tonight, we (finally!) went to see the Hobbit and Gandalf is climbing up that cliff up to the graves of the nazghul. He almost falls from that last step and hubby leans over and says "stupid jumping puzzle."  I spent the next several minutes giggling into my coat and trying not to be loud about it.

#96940 Time to Say Good-Bye & The Future of Ehmry.com

Posted Thuley on 10 November 2016 - 03:18 AM

After some 4 years it's time for me to bid you all farewell.

When we started Ehmry.com there was a core group of folks who believed that having a dedicated server forum will enhance the entertainment value we get out of GW2.  You can check the member list and sort by join date to see who was here at the time, and who's still here all these years later.

While the activity on this forum has certainly diminished over time that is as much about the change in game mechanics as it is about the nature of a niche community.

Know that I am extremely grateful for everyone who took the time to participate and be civil about it.  Thank you! Truly.

Life has taken me away from the game about two years ago, and due to my career demands I now need to completely step back from this effort and pass on the baton.

Rill has agreed to take over the ownership of the domains, the IP.Board license, the hosting for the board and the Teamspeak server.  You know that you are in good hands with her.

thetoothpick has stepped up and will assist with both the transition of the board and teamspeak to a new host, as well as future board admin duties.

In addition Aduah, Omni Cide, RizeJodo, and UltraEM will continue to serve as moderators as needed.

Once again, you are all awesome, thanks for being part of this little sliver of GW2 history.

#96167 Grav sorts his life out

Posted Grav on 15 April 2016 - 04:02 PM

So in a couple of previous posts here and there I've mentioned how I've lost a bit of weight since I stopped regularly playing GW2 last year.  I thought I might elaborate a little more fully on what I've been doing since then.

About a year ago I started walking to work, about 40 minutes each way.  This was something I had planned to do once I had moved offices, since the new building was slightly closer to home than the old one, but the move was delayed over and over and eventually I got tired of waiting, so I just started anyway.  The other thing of course was that it was autumn, the days were getting shorter, and if I had to be seen outside for extended periods while at my heaviest, better that it be during the time of year when fewer other people were outside as well.

Over the following 6 months - the winter of last year and into spring - I lost 5kg/11lb.  Which was better than nothing, but ultimately very little in percentage terms.  Overall I felt I was pretty much pissing into the wind, but it was at least working better than any sort of attempt at a diet that I'd tried in the past, none of which had ever accomplished anything at all.

Then October came around and the office move finally happened, so the walk became a bit easier at 35 minutes each way.  At this time I went to get some professional advice on what else I could be doing, and was dismayed to be told to go on a diet.  This one was a little different though.  Previously I'd always been told to either eat less fat or eat less everything, neither of which were sustainable because they always left me hungry.  This one however, emphasised low carbs and actually high fat (LCHF for short), which I recognised as being sufficiently different to be worth giving a shot.

So one sunny Saturday afternoon last October, I made myself a couple of bunless burgers for lunch.  That was 6 months ago today, and since then I've lost another 26kg/57lb at an average rate of exactly 1kg/week over that time.  Total lost since this time last year = 31kg/68lb.  I've lost a foot around my waist, and I now weigh as much as I did in my mid-teens (though to be fair I was still a fatty then too).

Ironically, a major enabler for this was actually GW2.  I started lowcarbing with the HoT release only a week or two away, already knowing I wasn't going to like it with the knowledge that they were taking my home BL away.  But what stepping away from the game has allowed me to do is actually spend more time "sorting my life out", from researching LCHF to spending more time in the kitchen, and more recently, clothes shopping... -_-

My goal at this point is to lose another 19-20kg or so in the next 6 months, which my recent track record suggests should be possible.  That would take me to about 45kg/100lb lost in 12 months, and 50kg/111lb lost altogether.  I have an overseas trip planned for this October so that will be my reward when the time comes.

I know this is a sensitive subject for a lot of people, myself included; I won't be posting pics and I'm not yet brave enough to say how much I actually weigh right now.  I also don't want to get too preachy about it, but I will say that if anyone else can relate to where I've been and would like to know more about what I've been doing and what I've learned, you're welcome to PM me if you don't want to reply publicly.

Onwards and downwards, as it were. o7

#81745 community standards amended, hacking added as bannable offense

Posted Thuley on 02 February 2015 - 10:13 PM

As you can see by the timestamp, the Ehmry Community Standards were put in place on August 24, 2012.

Over the past two and a half years those standards stood the test of time, through Ehmry's ups and downs, and were generally loosely enforced by Rill and myself.  Prior to today 47 accounts were in the Banned group.  Many of which were spammers from the early days of the forum, many more were accounts of banned individuals who just kept creating additional accounts till they ran out of resolve.  Overall less than a dozen active forum members were actually permanently banned from the forum.

The largely self-moderated forum community is not perfect.  However, considering that we are 30 months into it and the forum has survived and often thrived without the need for heavy handed moderation is an accomplishment that you made happen.

Because of this self-moderated approach things get sometimes out of hand and then Rill or I need to step in and make a decision as to whether or not to permanently remove someone from the forum.  Because different people have different levels of tolerance some may feel that we ban too soon while others may feel that we ban too late.

Overall we strive to be consistent in our decision-making.

Today, after a long period of consideration, I amended the Community Standards and included rule #11 which explicitly states that those who use hacks in game are no longer welcome on Ehmry.com.

Anet created a game that makes hacking possible and also consistently fails to remedy this technical shortcoming.  However, while Anet provides opportunity, players still need to supply the means and the motive.  This assigns the responsibility for hacking to the player and not to Anet.

Since GW2 WvW is a team sport and hacking provides an unintended advantage it is against the spirit of competition and thus those who engage in hacking are no longer welcome here.

Life is not fair, life is rough and ugly, but I will not fault anyone who comes into a game for wanting to get away from real life for a few moments and as gamers we ought to collectively respect our desire to escape real life and not have to face the same issues in-game.

#51917 Ehmry.com turns 1 year old!

Posted Thuley on 24 August 2013 - 04:09 PM

I can't really believe that it has been 1 year already.

Ehmry.com started out as this ugly little site running on SMF with just a really small group of core posters around.  Now we are the biggest and most active server forum community of them all.

A big thanks to those who were here in the beginning and a big thanks to those who continue to participate here on a daily basis.

Special thanks to:
Rill Soji for taking time to perform admin duties, and for the events you put on for others all the time!
Entrox for hosting the Teamspeak server. Menorah and Drakma for administering the Teamspeak server.
Dune and Madison who keep the Commander List updated (Laelith did that too for a while iirc).
LiveSpartan235 who took on the task of posting Guild Wars 2 updates.

It's always difficult to make a "thank you" post because it's very hard to include everyone by name.  There are countless members who have time and again contributed to this forum community by helping others, offering advice, and engaging in discussions.

We could look at the members and sort by post count, Heylo comes out on top, and while there are many who have made hundreds of posts there are also some who have made far fewer posts but those posts were right on and to the point.

I don't want to gloss over the contributions of the WvW players, it's just that I don't know that much about WvW anymore.  From what I see here on the forum Goldiy has been very active in organizing the WvW leadership forum as have many other players from [GH].

Please don't have a cow if I didn't mention you by name. Those who are here often, and those who log into the game often, know who the members are who contribute to the greater good.  Thank you all!

Also, this may be the opportune time to send those who day after day ensure that this forum stays active a small token of your appreciation in game.  Any one of these members can use gold or consumables, and a personal note will go a long way to show them that you really do appreciate the time and effort they put into this community. (And no, I don't mean that you should send me stuff, so please don't, I don't need it and I won't get to use it.)

#37819 Attention PvE guilds: WvW trainer for hire

Posted Grav on 14 May 2013 - 02:23 AM

Hi there,

my name's Grav, and I enjoy WvW.  As an experiment, I'd like to offer my services as a WvW commander/trainer for your PvE guild.

Perhaps your guild has been curious about WvW but never had anyone to show you the ropes.  Perhaps you tried it once yourself, found and followed a random commander who turned out to be pretty bad and got you all killed for no good reason and it put you off as a result.  Well, I can't promise you that I won't get you killed, but at least it will usually be for a pretty good reason when it happens. ;)

Here's what I propose on my part:

I will make myself available for WvW activities during Saturday evenings server time (not Fridays since reset nights are a bit chaotic at the best of times, and not Sundays since I work Sundays).  I will temporarily join your guild, and take the group into a borderland map and we will wreak some havoc together, the precise details of which would depend on the size of the group and how frisky it's feeling.

What your guild would do:

Use voice comms such as Teamspeak/Ventrilo/Mumble.  If you have your own server, then I will happily join it.  If not, then we can use Ehmry Bay's TS server.  Voice comms is something I must insist on; it makes my job so much easier than having to stop and type all the time, and you guys get the info so much more quickly.  Hopefully this isn't an issue as I imagine most dedicated PvE guilds use voice comms of some description for dungeons, fractals etc anyway.

Why am I doing this?

For a few reasons.  Lately, some of us regular WvWers have observed that our "pug" population has at times been - how shall I put this - something of a liability for our collective performance as a server.  But in my view there's a difference between ignorance and stupidity: the former can be remedied with education, the second occurs despite having being educated.  My aim is to simply do what I can to educate those who are willing to learn.  And I'm not in a WvW guild of my own (for timezone reasons more than anything else), so I'm not splitting any existing loyalties.

My credentials

- I have approx 15,000 WvW kills to date.  This is not a lot to some, but generally I play for greater match objectives other than kills, such as defending a tower for example.  The kills to me are just a happy byproduct of that activity.

- I may not belong to a WvW guild, but that doesn't mean I'm not capable of working with others and making a difference in my own way.  A few random endorsements:

Posted Image

- I'm an active contributor to this forum.  Among other things, I wrote this thread on homeland camp defense which seems to have been well received.

- I helped organise the establishment of Ehmry Bay's TS server soon after launch.  Also I have a weird accent if you're not from New Zealand. :P

In summary:

I don't claim to know everything; I have my strengths and my weaknesses.  But if I can help improve things by passing on what I do know, then I'm prepared to give it a go if you are.

If you're interested on behalf of your guild, send me an ingame mail or /whisper to Grav.3568 and we'll see what we can arrange. :)

Just a quick note to say that despite the changes the server is going through, and regardless of whether we will end up in Tier 8 and stay there forever, ehmry.com and the Teamspeak server at ts.ehmry.com will be here.

Thuley, Bastion had the power to do it and was threatening to do it, regardless of the fact that "there is no way"

Moderators have the ability to ban someone which was given to them to keep order in case of disruptive folks joining the server.  The admins are the ultimate authority when it comes to banning.

Here's the way I look at this; If someone who has been put in a position of public trust (i.e. being a mod on teamspeak), is threatening the public who uses the resource, then that person will be permanently removed from all public resources we run.

To make this more clear so that there's no mistake about it going forward; If anyone who has the ability to ban people from the Ehmry Bay public Teamspeak threatens to ban anyone from that Teamspeak for any personal or guild internal reason, then the person doing the threatening will be permanently banned from the Teamspeak and the forum without any possibility for recourse or appeal.

It's inexcusable to abuse the position of public trust.

#4213 Steam Legion [PUNK]

Posted Madison on 15 October 2012 - 11:38 AM

One thing I love about the MMO community is the amazing range of people I get to meet.  What started out as a core group of close friends has expanded into an amazingly fun group of [PUNK]s.

We are a Victorian Steam Punk themed guild.  We range from casual to semi-hardcore players, with a little RP sprinkled on top.

Although we enjoy all aspects of Guild Wars, we have a lot of fun in W3.  We are supportive of our members progressing through the PVE content, and will always lend a hand to help you out.

Our time zones range all across the US map, and I mean that literally (even Alaska!), so the chance of finding someone in your time zone is high, and we are in game most nights.

We use mumble, and although talking in mumble is not a requirement we would like you to have the ability to at least listen in.  This makes our W3, and dungeon coordination much easier.  However, if you absolutely can’t use voice comms you are still welcome, and your flogging will be gentle.

You can contact us at steamlegion.net.  In game you can contact: Siiddhartha, Atnem, Direwulff or Madison Reign.

Edited:  We have regularly scheduled dungeon runs to meet the needs of the [PUNK]s (ie) tokens, paths to complete, story modes etc.  We have regularly scheduled WvW times, and we have started a sPvP team.  I prefer that my [PUNK]s rep because we are not looking to just fill our ranks.  We are looking for longevity, hoping to find those with a common enjoyment of gaming to become part of our little community.

I have [PUNK]s that I have been gaming with for the last 6 years; some for the last 2 years; and some that I have met here in GW2 that I have no doubt I will be gaming with for years to come.  We spend almost every night together gaming, and we have a great time.  We've shared the ups and downs that life brings - we laugh, we fight, but in the end we are the best of friends, and that dysfunctional family that everyone loves to watch.  I have no problem with people guild hopping, because the time you spend in game and with your guild has to be fun for you, otherwise what's the point.  If you find we aren't a good fit then let us know and we will wish you well (I will wish you well; Siidd will tell you to gtfo, but he means it in the nicest way).

Disclaimer***our mumble comms are rated R - if you are easily offended - you will most likely be offended.  I don't believe in policing adults.  We are all professionals by day, but when the evening comes around and the kids are in bed - I say have a drink, relax, and let's have fun.  It's a game after all - we are serious when its warranted; otherwise we are a bunch of happy adults sharing a common hobby.  We are an 18+ guild.  :)
