haha i do have a back story and such, since im used to RP but my quesiton is where do i find ppl to RP with, and like, more than just one or two haha

and RP with a full storyline, long term character development, evolving world/history changes, etc

I've done a bit of Roleplaying in the past, but it was with Anime settings, never tried it with this type of setting before..

lets chat a bit here for how it generally works on this mmo setting, is there a certain system, rules, set up, im interested in how ppl actually do it in  a game? do you use the custom emotes to narrate or something or type in chat? is it a private chat channel? I write prose RP most of the time, how do people do it in mmo?

ive never done it before so any info would help!

If you are following the GW2 style of story/RP just come up with the most high school musical/disney channel/nickolodeon thing you can think of and you'll fit right in.

I love the game, but seriously they fucked this story six ways from sunday. GW1 had a very interesting composition while GW2's writers are all 13 year old girls... at least one would think so by the content. I mean can we just get Logan and Ryltock to bang already... it happened in my fanfic.

Typically it works in one of two ways, if you're right there with someone you use custom emotes and /say to help tell the story.

If you're not together, you essentially narrate in whispers or in a custom/guild channel.  At least those are the two ways I've done it.

I'm glad this was brought up. RP was a gameplay option that hadn't really been addressed by the community yet.

Someone with more experience than me should fill in some guidelines/suggestions for good RP bios. I can only think of a few:

1) Don't stray too far from the source material. Trying to RP a vampire in GW would be difficult at best and off-putting to others at worst. RP should be easy. The material is there, so there is plenty to inspire you.

2) Try to avoid the temptation of being the exception. It's a world full of mostly average folks that became heroes, so if the first person you meet has molten destroyer blood and the second is half harpy, it quickly feels less and less like a GW environment. And let's face it, only Reina will be able to pull off the whole "raised by quaggans" angle.

3) Give your character a personality. I actually feel like a character's history isn't as important as their preferences, aspirations, and quirks. Flaws are great for this, especially serious flaws like crippling phobias or addictions. One example could be a human old-timer who is incredibly racist against charr, which leads me to...

4) Leave room for growth. The most compelling characters in stories are the ones that actually change over time. Maybe the racist human reins himself in so much that he actually starts having a change of heart (Gran Torino?). Or maybe it was all a cover and he actually plays cards with a couple of old gladiums every other week. Bonus: the gladiums could be other PCs too. As long as you don't have a definitive endpoint for growth, your character can stay interesting and relevant for a long time. After all, IRL as we solve one problem another usually comes up.

As far as I'm concerned, Steambeard is 110% correct - pretty solid set of guidelines. I feel like those of us who would want to do this for an extended period of time shouldn't have a problem abiding by them.

I have very, very little experience with role-play myself, but in games like this, I enjoy giving my characters personalities and quirks, even if it's for my own amusement. I like what I've given Jaea so far, and I see potential to flesh her out a bit more, so it wouldn't be a stretch for me to jump in with you guys and give it a try.

I'll be open to join any rps but when i do i usually have a separate ac for that. Before coming to ebay, i had rp a bit at tarnished coast but it kinda irked me because they disliked me not having a full name to rp that was a good setting. Blah (no point to the story but yeah i love to rp when its not complicated)

Yeah. I have. Textually of course, given that I love writing. I've never really done it in a game, since I've always had the "MMO's are for PvP" mentality. But I'd definitely love to try it in GW2; just that I don't know many RP'ers in game, since I'm in WvW so much haha.

They seem to forget the most famous of non full names in fantasy pop culture: Strider. We all know the depth of this character.

Good stuff, Steambeard.  I would only add to that something Unacam touched on: don't be a snob.

Sure it's good to remind people of their outlandish storylines or help them be more realistic, but when you won't RP with someone because they're not up to 'your standards' you just make it harder for everyone.  Enjoy people's RP; give them helpful (read: not negative) tips; focus on melding your stories to theirs and creating an interweaving set of stories.  That's when the best and msot fun RP happens.

This is probably even more important than the ones I listed, because I'm coming from a tabletop perspective where everybody is already friends. I still remember trying to figure out how to RP in AOL chat rooms, and the RP elites would often chase away prospective players instead of just helping them out.
