GW1 was the first MMO of any kind I played, and I only started because anet sold the game kinda as the anti-MMO...very competition oriented with the promise of zero gear grind or massive time sinks like WoW. I managed to get quite a few people from my UT2k4 clan to start up and what happened...oh of course many of us didn't sleep for about 5 days straight blowing the the PvE campaign. I still think we were one of the first groups to finish the campaign, and when we were ported back to Droknar's Forge after a glorious victory over the forces of evil, I was completely delirious and the few players who had reached that far didn't believe that we had finished. The second time through, after realizing how completely awful rangers were at launch (history repeats itself?), I remember much hilarity and failure with pug groups doing the harder quests and missions. In retrospect though, those are the things I felt GW2 was severely lacking in since you can do basically 90% of the game with auto attacks as a loner.

Eventually we did do some GvG, which we were shockingly bad at, and a few of us started doing tombs (later hero's ascent) for fame on what became a massive, massive time sink for tigers. That was what I actually really enjoyed about GW1 though was the theorycrafting and trying to build a core of players that were competent enough to try new things, although I admit that in the end a huge portion of my fame came from iwaying and tab hexing like a boss. It's funny because the last guild I was in for GW1 to make the final push for the mighty tiger is actually on CD, and I didn't even know. There was also some period of time in there were I became obsessed with RA and TA and did nothing but that, getting up to G6 before they ez moded the title. AB was also a lot of fun and I did both faction titles doing almost nothing but playing a telegank hammer warrior and epic hammer bash charge! assassin.

So there's my thesis on GW1

PS:

I sorta envy the people who came to this game from DAoC. It sounds like people are either incredibly rosy glasses about DAoC, or that WvW is just a really poor attempt at what that game accomplished.

DAoC is 12 years old and pretty much invented Realm vs Realm; I'm sure A.net will give WvW more love over the next year. People compare WvW to DAoC's RvR, and apparently, WvW is the closest thing any other games have to DAoC's RvR. GW2 isn't even a year old yet, so I'm expecting things to get better(New WvW maps for instance).

GW1 was my first mmo, then a friend tried to convince me to get into WoW, (was poor highschool student and parents didn't like me gaming) so then eventually when i got a part time job i started playing, because my friend bought the game AND a month for me, then i was hooked for 5 years, oh where does the time go :\

Futashia: Level 80 Warrior
The one and only character on GW2 I have that I will ever care about.

My first memory of a PC game i was addicted to was Defender of the Crown on an old IBM running DOS and a 5.25 inch floppy drive. I was about 6 or 7, this was around 1991 though my dad was just cheap and gave me a hand me down.

Then i lost interest in PC gaming for a bit until a friend introduced me to Command & Conquer in 1996. Since then i have hopped from game to game. Some memorable ones would be Age Of Empires 1 & 2, Starcraft, Medal of Honor, Unreal Tournament 1, Counterstrike 1 and Source and Dawn of War.

I got into MMO's around 2006 when i got a job doing shift work and had to spend 3 nights with nothing to do when my 3 day break fell between an afternoon shift and a night shift. I would have to stay awake all night to get ready for the night shift so i needed something to keep me going, that something was WoW.
Shortly after starting WoW, my girlfriend was watching me play one day and she became fascinated at the idea that it was a game full of other people all the time, and so began the MMO addiction of bubbleybubby
We quit WoW near the end of 2008 because we were sick of guild politics ruining the game.
Flash forward to the release of GW2.
I came home one day and announced to bubbley that i had pre-ordered a copy of this new MMO. She was skeptical but said she would wait and see what it is like when i play.
She watched me play for a few hours on release day then asked me to get her a copy

I created TDE because there was no Oceanic server to join at the time and i was having trouble finding people to group with during our busy time.

Ragnarok Online got me into MMOs. Loved the community in that game. It was just a big interactive chat room with tons and tons of grinding but hey, it was the people I met that made the memories. Played a bunch of random MMOs after that but could never find a community quite like the one on RO so never stuck around any game for too long.

GW2 has been pretty awesome and this is probably the longest I've stuck to any MMO since RO, which says something about the community.

Ragnarok Online was my first real MMO.  Miss it very much and I'm willing to go back and give it a chance since it's free.

GvG at it's finest imo.  GUILD HALLS!
