I think the Ultimate edition is only available for Pre-Purchase. I know for sure they have said you can't upgrade to it. You can upgrade to Deluxe later if you only buy the standard version. Also, based on wording of the blog post, the free character slot for veterans is only during pre-purchase,

Well, I said I'd buy it if they added a slot, so it looks like I'm pre-ordering tonight. I was going to just get the regular version, but are the gems discounted with the ultimate? I honestly don't know.

The gems are not discounted with the ultimate, but added on.

And a dev on reddit (GaileGrey) said that Deluxe and Ultimate edition would get 2 character slots instead of one.

No, the gems aren't discounted.  800*5 = 4000 Gems.

That brings Ultimate back up to the better deal of you are getting the expansion for 40. (Because 2 character slots instead of 1, plus 4000 gems) 100-10-50= $40. If you want the best bang for your money its in ultimate xD

I'm preordering tonight. Anet listened to people's complaints and went above and beyond. Now the ultimate edition has TWO character slots? That's fantastic that they extended the bonus slot to all levels. Yes, please! Kinda sucks if you can't afford it right away, you lose the extra slot, but you will hopefully have at least a couple of months to save for it.

Huh. In that case, I don't really see the point. Extra slots notwithstanding, you're still spending $50 for $50 worth of gems. I'll stick with the regular version. If I want something from the gem store, I'll just buy gems as needed or farm like a demented farmer until I have enough gold to trade in.

Ultimate gems are technically discounted. The first $25 ($50 -> $75) Ultimate is all the bonus stuff from Deluxe ($75) (i.e. character slot, finisher, skins, etc.) The next $25 ($75 -> $100) are for the 4k gems, which is $50 normal price. If you view the character slot, finisher, skins, etc as free I guess you could say the gems are normal price.

But you have to compare the cost of Ultimate to the cost of Deluxe, not to the cost of the standard edition.  You're basically getting the gems for half price, or, if you want to look at it another way, you're buying the gems for full price, but getting all the Deluxe Edition bonuses for free.

That's sort of where I'm coming from. I don't care about the finisher, mini, glider skin, or hall decoration, so the only things of interest in the deluxe and ultimate versions are the slots and gems. I think a character slot should be included when you buy the expansion regardless of version—and now it is; thank you for doing the decent common-sense thing, ANet—so as I see it, I'd be paying $50 for HoT, and $50 for $50 worth of gems. Not much of a deal from my perspective.

Well the Deluxe and Ultimate editions are still getting an additional character slot.

True, but I if wanted a second slot (i.e., in addition to the one now included in the standard version), I could get it for $10 in the gem store. That would be a total price of $60 for standard version HoT + second slot, which would still be less than $75 or $100. Again, I don't care about the other extras.

Yes, and you get all the other doo dads right away as well.  So I have the gems, the finisher, and the extra character slots.  I put the guild decorations, etc. in the bank for now
. . . .Well I may have spent some of the gems already on the new wings.  To be fair though, Cassy now looks a bit like an avenging angel.  If elementalists get flaming swords it would complete that look.
