Please do tell me where they stated there would be no expansions. Then we'll talk about that. Pretty sure all I've seen from the community for two years was begging for an expansion. They've kept to the no monthly fee promise.

1) The requirement to be classified as an expansion is that you need the base game. GW1 Factions and Nightfall are not expansions. Even Arenanet has stated this:

"Guild Wars Eye of the North, sometimes abbreviated to EotN or GW:EN, is the fourth purchasable installment in the original Guild Wars game. It is intended to tie the Guild Wars storyline with that of Guild Wars 2. Instead of using a campaign format used by Guild Wars Factions and Guild Wars Nightfall, Eye of the North is a traditional expansion on any of the existing campaigns, rather than a standalone game. Players cannot create characters based on the expansion; there is no tutorial area or additional professions.Eye of the North was released on August 31st, 2007."

2) So is Eye of the North and every other expansion for any MMO ever. The core game sets the stage for any content provided after it. They are not labeling HoT as a new core game, they are labeling it as an expansion because that is what it is, they are simply providing the core game because getting new players in increases revenue from the gemstore. That is why I stated Arenanet caters to Active players and not Veterans.

3) You are correct, but that's because like everyone else on this thread has said : They haven't shown us enough. And I 100% agree with it, but from what I have seen both in HoT and the past 2.75 years, I see that it worth the money. Everyone is entitled to their thresholds on whether to buy or not.

They've already stated it's only going to be 5-10 zones, but nearly every zone has 3 layers to it. Hence why they explained the Canopy/ Forest Floor/ and Cave system aspect to it. Arenanet is taking a totally different approach to maps now. Also, they have stated the campaign will be repeatable for each person and you can explore all the branches of the story this time around on one character. That is more than the core offered and they are still trying to fix the core story. Some of us like the story of the game. The Living Story is separate from the personal story believe it or not. It's a continuation to give the perception of a world that is still passing day by day, just in chunks. And it's not "most likely" for HoT players only, it is going to be that way because they have 100% said that. I really think you should read and learn before you talk about stuff.

Please show me the original statement saying no expansions. They've said countless times that their goal to keep this game going 10-15 years down the road would need expansions.

I really would like to know what is wrong the post, please PM it to me if it is that bad.

1. A lot of MMOs have expansions which make them seem to have more PvE content than was originally offered. GW2 values itself on replayability and appeals the casual gamer. People love the game, but they want harder content that is less casual because they love the game and what it offers. If they hated the game they wouldn't be asking for more.

2. No, they have said the core is free now if you buy HoT. Why? Because they want people accessing the gem shop. So if you want to attack Arenanet on pricing, focus your hate on the gem shop, not the expansion.

Sure it may only have 30$ worth of content in some people's eyes, but in others (like myself and Slein have pointed out), spending fractions of a dollar an hour is well worth our money. I have a job, I graduated from college so I could buy stuff I enjoyed. I enjoy Guild Wars 2. Veterans, tbh, should not feel entitled if they truly enjoy something.

@ Maxx, for this conversation being uncivilized, is it because we're defending a point counter to the vocal majority or is it simply because Slein started mudslinging? :(

Also to anyone who thinks that my belief that giving core away for free is about the gem store, watch this video. The topic is competitive gaming, but the marketing director of Arenanet on the left says alot about how the game is marketed and why they like competitive players. (if you don't watch the whole thing, watch min 3:45 -> 8) :

Basically:

Competitive Players play the game longer -> Players monetize better the more they play -> Paraphrase: "Playtime = Money... Our business model isn't based on subscription, we sell a box and we have an MTX store. In fact a majority of income since launch has been the MTX store."

Why did you quote a post twice, and where are you getting 50/60? Please clarify. And also, HoT isn't a core game, therefore it shouldn't have as much content. Still waiting on my PM, I address most of the points you made and agreed with you on some. I would expect to hear a rebuttal with facts.

HoT is $50
Core was $60

HoT is 83.3% of the cost of the core game. Is it wrong to expect HoT to have 83.3% of the content offered in the core game?

Do you believe HoT will have the amount of content that adds up to 83.3% of the original release?

From my vantage point (which is shared by most veteran players) HoT will struggle to contain 50% of the amount of content the core game has.

:)

Has any expansion ever had 83% of the core game? Because most expansions have been nearly the same cost of the core game when at original price.

You can expect whatever, but it's not a sufficient justification for throwing a bitch-fit about it being a bad value.  If someone sells you a new Mercedes CLK350 for $600.00, then offers you a new (non-transferable) Volkswagen Golf for $500.00, the Golf is a less ridiculously good value than the Mercedes, but that doesn't mean the Golf is a bad value.  Expansions are seldom if ever equal value to the base game if you look at it in that way, but that doesn't make them poor value.

But I wouldn't even try to quantify the value of expansions in that way in the first place.  I look at it more as the expansion is what is needed to enable me to continue to enjoy the most complete experience of the game for the next 1-3 years.  Unlimited entertainment for a year is easily worth $50 USD for me.  There's no need to make it any more complicated than that.

And there's no reason to compare it to anything other than other ways you could spend the same $50 right now.  Comparing it to GW1 is an irrelevant comparison; compare it to other games currently on the market and to other forms of entertainment besides gaming.  Anything else is meaningless.

The content doesn't provide what you think it will.

Look I hope I'm wrong but looking at the facts says that HoT isn't worth $50. You might think otherwise but have yet to offer concrete evidence besides blind faith.

I one time know a guy who think pork has a greatest value relative to beef, fish and even chicken. He goes around and sings his porky song despite I've told him there is more into value perceived by a consumer than just a piece of currency and/or utility value attachment. All the PhD thesis papers written by the best minds w/ statistic, math and what's not, trying to compete for the last drop, (or the 1st drop) of the consumer' purse, have no use to convince him to drop his insistence that his idea of value is superior than others.
Well, then he got a job in a Muslim country. Haven't heard from him since.

You paid $60 to play the game for three years.  Seems like pretty gods damned good value-for-money to me.  Even if you're really really really casual and only play an average of 30 minutes per day, you got awesome entertainment for $0.11 per hour.
I completely agree with this.  I am torn between the $70 edition, vs the $100 edition because it includes all the bonuses and $40 worth of gems.  If I splurge it will cut into the budget I was planning on using for fossilized dinosaur feathers . . . . .

I have played games for about 30 years, so my perspective is a little different.

If you were in an old fashioned arcade you would have been able to buy a car with the number of quarters it would take to play this long.  If it were WoW, or EQ2, you would have paid at least 10 times as much.  If it were cable t.v.  this would cover 1 or 2 months of entertainment.

If anyone is upset about the cost, wait a bit and I am sure it will go on sale, possibly on Steam.  Arenanet has been very good about having promotions with its products, and I am sure the hype train will make a few more stops and one will include a $29.99 upgrade or something.

It isn't as if the game is coming out this week, so there is time to consider the options, and see if it goes on sale.

I strongly encourage all of you to do the same, because ANet has given you one of the most amazing entertainment bargains in history, and this is the best way of expressing satisfaction.  If you pay, hopefully nothing will change.

I think that has tipped the balance :)
This is a great excuse for me to get the $100 version . . .thanks Slein!

The process of delivering your additional character slot will take us some time, but rest assured we will get it to you as soon as possible. We’ll provide more details about the specific timing soon."

So, you'll get a slot... sometime. Ah well, good enough for me. My only complaint was addressed.
