I would have no problem with 50, if i felt it was worth 50. Gw1 released two stand alone campaigns at 50. Which I happily purchased when it was brand new. They were whole, complete games.  They added an extra character slot and two new classes, Whole new regions, with a DIFFERENT story line. Eye of the north was the first 'expansion' that required the base game. it was something like 30. I'd compare EotN to HoT. Maybe I will feel different about it once they clarify EXACTLY what buying HoT gets you. Many people clearly don't think its worth 50, because none of us are even sure whats all included. The community who is solely focused PvP and WvW, are less inclined to purchase and/or see the benefit of purchasing such a steep price. If they aren't in it for the story, then what? A new class? A new guild hall?

All I'm saying is 50 is way too much for an expansion that a.) People only have a foggy idea whats in it. b.) has no release date.

EDIT:

LOL 2 people saying the exact same thing while I was typing that post. xD

I really don't get the lack of a release date. I've never seen a pre-order without a release date before.

I'll assume its because they want the money now, but its not ready. They want to make money off the promise of beta invites, while they are still working on the expansion.

@Maksyn which is why I play Guild Wars and not WoW. Hahaha

Yes, ANet hasn't revealed to a full extent exactly how much content we're getting with HoT, not even a release window, so even if I did want to pre-order, I would wait until we get more information. What we do know is that there will be less PvE zones than vanilla but each will be "richer" in content, Masteries, Specializations, + the new PvP, WvW stuff, Guild Halls, and access to the next two season of Living Story. A chunk of that stuff (WvW, Specialization System, etc) will be accessible to players regardless if they own HoT or not. I suspect not much will be revealed until the beta tests.

I remember when you could buy a gallon of petrol for $0.85.  The fact that it costs over $3.00 now is bullshit; cars are ridiculous and extortionist!

They did the exact same thing with GW2. Pre-order was in April 2012 (IIRC) with not even a guesstimated release date, while actual release wasn't until late August.

Edit: Speaking of August, I wouldn't be surprised if they were hoping to release HoT close to the three-year anniversary. If you figure another six weeks for specialization reveals, plus a few weeks more for the WvW maps, etc., plus some beta weekends along the way, it could maybe work.

It is, and they are, but in this case, it's less about the price and more about what we will/won't get for it. [insert rant about no character slot here]

From what we do know, we can be fairly confident that the release will be after 08 August, but likely not long after.

Keep in mind, people over in WoW paid 60 bucks for Mists of Pandaria and possibly 80 if they wanted a deluxe version. This includes the monthly fee. Also, every Guild Wars 1 expansion was 50.

The only thing that has me hesitant is the missing information on what exactly we're getting. Still have no idea how much PvE content there's going to be. The price could be very justified and it could very well not be. *shrug*

I can't speak for WoW from a first person standpoint, but did buying the expansion give you 1 month of membership too? Also, GW1 "expansions" were comeplete separate games (Factions/Nightfalls) that could link to the first. EotN was the only true expansion and was $35 if I remember right?

Personally there are 2 reasons why I think there isn't one.
  • They truly don't know how well the expansion is right now and need the beta, and that's literally all Pre-Purchase is guaranteeing for early purchase is beta access. The bonuses in Deluxe will be available forever, just like original Deluxe has been. Based off feedback and issues from the longer beta weekends, they can more accurately estimate when a release date should be. To this point, the betas have been glorified stress tests
  • It's kind of standard in the game industry nowadays to have all this pre-purchase stuff going on. Between early-access and other names for it.

TBH, I bought it and didn't really care about the price. Should have come with a character slot, but I can just get that with gold => gems.

Expansion is a rip off

They've stated not a stand alone. They've stated not nearly as big as core game. They've stated most of the updates are free.

You are paying $50 for DLC. Again you are paying for DLC.

Who offers pre purchase with no release date or supposedly less than 1/2 of the content revealed? GTFO here I wasn't born yesterday. That shit is gonna take maybe 3 days to complete and in the end y'all believers gonna be posses off realizing you got took for $50.

$30 at best

DLC is the gem store in my opinion. The way you phrase DLC makes every expansion ever has been DLC (free or paid). I'm also not paying 15$ to even access this "DLC" after I've bought it. I wasted 3 years of my life on Runescape membership and paid more total than I have on GW2, and I've accomplished alot more on GW2. Better friendships, better community, and alot more than just playing a game. And alot of people offer prepurchase/earlyaccess/etc before a release date. Notable example, Minecraft had a few years of alpha/beta before it went full release. You don't PvE much if you think 3 days will cover everything the expansion has to offer. Just stick with the core game, no one is making you buy it.

Regardless of the price, I'm still too pissed off at Anet for {a} refusing to address the WvW population imbalance issue after literally years of looking the other way, and {b} replacing my home BL with a gimmick carnival.

Things can always change between now and release, but as things currently stand, I won't be buying it.

Yeah, probably won't buy it.
Game got way too boring for me way too fast and I have not owned it and played nearly as long as many people whom are finally getting bored.
I see the new bells and whistles entertaining for about 3-6 mos, then back to normal again.
50 is not much money, but wayyyyyy too much for what they are offering.

It's not even the offering of the base game to new players that's an issue. I get that, and as much as I do feel kind of dismissed, I would be willing to accept it given the potential it has to grow the game's community. However, what I am not okay with is Anet asking $50 to pre-purchase an "expansion" that may very well have a pitiful amount of content.

Sure, they've shown a few things, but have they really shown enough to justify such a steep price? Because right now, it feels like they're charging $50 for something the size of a few meager feature packs. And yes, I'm aware more content announcements are likely. Although, that doesn't change that they went public with the $50 price BEFORE said announcements. Personally, I believe what they have revealed so far is not even close to being worth $50.

Friends, I strongly encourage you to hold off on the pre-purchase until Anet proves to us that the expansion is worth it. Not giving them your money is the only true way of expressing dissatisfaction. If you pay anyway, nothing will change.

So $50 for an expansion that will be entertaining for 3-6 months is a bad deal, but $60 for a new console game that keeps you busy for about a week is industry standard...

I think I've figured out what's going on here.  ANet is the parent who has spoilt their children.  Guild Wars 2 was such incredible value, offering not only an amazingly deep game with potentially tens of thousands of hours of gameplay for no subscription fee and a completely non-invasive cash shop, but then on top of that offering tons of free add-ons with actual gameplay content, tons of quality of life additions, lots of toys to play with, etc.  I quite literally don't think I've ever bought anything in my life that has been better value-for-money than Guild Wars 2.  I've played 7200 hours on my main account, meaning I've paid about 0.8 CENTS per hour to this point for high quality entertainment.  And I could probably play the game this long again without a single new patch, to be honest.

Against any other standard of comparison, this expansion will be a great value.  It's cheaper than stand-alone games that you can finish in a week, with way more longevity than such games have for certain.  Never mind other ways you could spend your entertainment budget, like going out for drinks, going to the cinema, or even paying for a decent cable TV package.  But you guys are so spolit by how the phenomenal value ANet has given you up to this point, that there's no possible way for them to please you.  They've been giving you everything you could ever want for free for years, and now they dare to ask for a relatively small amount of money for something, so you're throwing your toys out of the pram.

It's ridiculous.

I bought the $100 version, which effectively costs 350% more for me than for most of you, because I live in a much smaller economy with a much lower cost of living and comparatively lower incomes.  I strongly encourage all of you to do the same, because ANet has given you one of the most amazing entertainment bargains in history, and this is the best way of expressing satisfaction.  If you pay, hopefully nothing will change.

I agree with Slein on the value of GW2. Over 1500 hours or so I think, and all for $60. While I'm fine with the price, I will hold off on any prepurchase until there's more info (even if I'll probably end up buying it anyway). Just trying to make it a habit not to pre-purchase things.

(Except Witcher 3. You can't argue with 20% off on a game you know you'll love)

I won't be pre-purchasing because I'd have no time to participate in the open beta events anyways but I think $50 is fine. ANET has provided us with hours upon hours worth of content in the past couple of years whilst having no subscription fee for the game: SAB, Seasonal Events, Living Story etc. And once the expansion drops I would expect them to continue providing us with content that would expand on the expansion.

Many of you are questioning Anet's loyalty to veteran players, If anything i think this should be our chance to show Anet our loyalty, especially since I haven't paid a dollar since the original purchase. But I agree that they should of added an additional character slot (& a bank slot while they're at it).
