Spoiler

I get all that—academically, at least—but you can't win the match if you don't hold the nodes, so...how is it not ultimately about the nodes? The fights and the deployment of resources or whatever all have the goal of keeping the nodes so the points can keep ticking. Like I said above, yes, there are strategic/tactical decisions to be made, but everything still comes down to passively ticking points (and gimmicky "kill this NPC in the corner for bonus points" shit). I personally find that underwhelming and uninteresting.

Well, obviously the nodes matter on a macro level, but only really on a macro level.  Think of it as the nodes set the rules of engagement, but they play a pretty passive role in the play beyond that.  One of the biggest mistakes made by not only novice players, but even many experienced players who have never played at a competitive level, is prioritising decisions based on the nodes rather than the engagements.  Aside from the dying moments of a close match, it's almost always better to lose the node in order to gain an advantage in the fights.  And that holds true on the immediate level--always leave the node to kite rather than letting yourself die on node--but also on a larger scale.  Part of being a great player is having that tactical foresight to see those gambit plays--recognising, for example, that by giving up your close node, you can set up an advantageous 4v4 at mid, which will eventually allow your team to snowball off of kills in that engagement to then win further engagements elsewhere.  When you win the fights, the nodes pretty much take care of themselves.  In high-level play, you'll sometimes see teams take a hundred point lead or more on the opener (usually a 1-0 cap), but still "lose the opening" (i.e. be disadvantaged), because the opposing team got favourable deployments for the fights, which eventually resulted in winning those fights, which in turn gives them map control.

I agree with most of this, the nodes are kind of secondary and its more important to win fights.  It's kind of hard to actually explain and for someone to understand unless they actually start looking at how different things they do affect the outcome of the match.  It's not something you can just read and understand, you have to play it to really understand.  The problem being that most people I feel over think while playing and get flustered while fighting and trying to think about the nodes and how far behind or ahead you are in points.  Winning a team fight that kills over half the enemy team at the start sets you up pretty well for the rest of the game, but you can't get to confident and not let them do the same back to you after they come back.

Work is getting on my nerves, but aside from that, not bad. I've gotten sucked into Dragon Age (seven years late, but there you have it), so I've been taking a semi-break from GW2.

I'll say this: in terms of fluidity and simple fun-to-play-ness, GW2 is tied with Brawl Busters for having the most enjoyable combat of any game I've ever played. I would kill for a sprawling Bioware-esque RPG with GW2 combat.

I'm not doing to bad.  Picked up crashlands for my phone, so I've been playing that a lot and still have a metric ton to do in Xenoblade chronicles X.  I really want to come back to gw2 and make it my main game again but without anything to really work towards other then cosmetics I'm finding it hard.  I wish they would finally reveal the wvw update, I really miss that game mode and roaming with all of you.

I noticed opal hasn't logged in for a while either, is she taking a break too or did something happen?

Not sure. I kinda suspect there's a lot of HoT-related stuff that has annoyed a lot of people and maybe driven them away from the game, at least for a bit.

I'm really hoping this much-talked-about WvW update revitalizes the mode, but I'm trying to keep my expectations low realistic.

No you were right the first time, low.  Wvw has always been my favorite game mode but the new bl spread people to thin and the auto upgrade thing just made it really hard to do much of anything solo or in a small group.  Maybe I'll start making 1 night a week where I play for a good chunk of time, if for nothing else to hang out with all of you :)  Probably Friday nights as that's the night I can stay up latest without suffering the next day from lack of sleep :P

Well, they finally turned off (or are going to turn off? I'll have to double-check) the auto-upgrading, which should help make flipping camps and sentries actually useful again. Beyond that, I'm not sure what Anet plans to do, though considering how completely out-of-touch they often seem, I'm not getting my hopes up.

It's kinda weird, but...I miss the old BL map. I had my grievances about it, but it was at least accessible. The new map is just too much of a pain in the ass to navigate, and it seems to favor bigger groups.

All that being said, do stop in. We can try to roam and cause trouble. :P
